Rev. J. Muehlhauser became the second pastor in 1878. Conditions were not too good and unbeknown to the church board and congregation, Rev. Muehlhauser joined the Missouri Lutheran Church. He was asked to resign, which he did, but again he took his followers with him and organized and built St. Matthew Lutheran Church around the corner on Morris Street. This was in 1884.
